Great Story....Not a Great Book August 10, 2010 A Humble Reader I'd imagine any golf fan who watched this particular U.S. Open was thrilled throughout, particularly Sunday and Monday. Rocco Mediate, clear underdog, someone we could all root for, a real life "Rocky,"....against the Woods machine. Feinstein provides a solid buildup throughout the first half of the book regarding Mediate's background, and even does well describing the actual golf action in the second half. It just felt like a VERY LONG magazine article. Good, solid, informative. Just not at all a great book and not one I'd recommend anyone rush out to read.
What a GREAT RIDE! July 16, 2010 christy (Meadow Vista, CA, US) My husband and I were there. It was a beautiful, glorious day at Torrey Pines Golf Club. Our son played there many times as a Junior Golfer (The Junior World's)several times and I fell in love with the course immediately! Tiger also played with our son (they're the same age), so our son never won.... but what a lot of fantastic experiences. This wonderful book just brought it all back in living color. We were on the 18th green when Tiger's put went in to cause the playoff! How incredible is that??? You do not need to be a golf fan to love this book. You need to be a fan of the human spirit and the "need to succeed". Rocco is such a super person all around and his thoughts and words are just fantastic to "watch". I loved this book!!!
Compelling, if not Feinstein's best work February 26, 2010 Philip Simon (Caldwell, NJ) It's a great story. Tiger with a broken leg and Rocco with age and a bad back holding him back. And yet the battled over the course of 91 holes to an unbelievable finish.
The best part of the book was the previously untapped (at least to me) history of Mediate. I didn't know, for example, that he nearly had to give up the game or that he is a huge Rush fan.
Feinstein has set the bar high over the years and some of his other books I found a little more riveting--e.g., Next Man Up. Perhaps this is because I knew how "Are You Kidding Me?" ends.
A good read about perhaps the most compelling event that I've ever seen.
A quick read and a mediocre golf book January 5, 2010 Shannon W. Walker (Virginia Beach) I was not overly impressed with the book as it wondered away from the story too often. Its a decent read for golf fans, but I expected more about the actual match, what led up to the match, and maybe a little more about his interaction with Tiger. Hearing about Rocco's child hood is not what I was expecting.
Entertaining October 28, 2009 Robert L. Gauthier (Minnesota) A good and insightful look into what it is like to be a journeyman pro golfer. Typical Feinstein book, easy read, somewhat formulaic, but gets the essence of the person out.
