3 out of 5 stars Good summer read   July 13, 2007
This is the first book in this series and by this author that I have read. It didn't WOW me, but it was pleasant reading for a balmy summer evening out on the patio. The writing is good enough, and the protagonist is human enough to be believable and likable enough that I will very probably read more of the series. As for the golf, I am not a golfer myself, but I have watched enough Masters tournaments and Dinah Shore-hosted tournaments over the years to understand what she was talking about. In any case, it isn't the focus of the story, it is really only the setting. If you like light mysteries with ongoing characters that you can get to know throughout a series, give it a try.

4 out of 5 stars I need to get to Pinehurst   August 14, 2006
Cassie and her merry band of misfits are at it again. I love the setting in Pinehurst and the re-occuring characters. The character development of the new cast of characters was probably edited, but it would have made for a juicier novel to know more about their backgrounds. The theme is a little more adult in nature this time around. More romance and disappointment amoung the characters. Islieb does a good job of showing character flaws and weeknesses.

5 out of 5 stars Fairway to Heaven   August 11, 2006
Wonderful mystery for a golf addict to read. Knowledgeable author in the golf field. I believe all golfers and mystery fans will enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars If you love mysteries and golf, even if you don't like golf this is it!   June 7, 2006

Cassie Burkette is a closet masochist--the only thing her shrink, Dr. Baxter hasn't diagnosed about her. Why else would she agree to play in a three-tour golf tournament at Pinehurst #2 with her father, who taught her golf and then abandoned her family--and her on-again, off-again love interest, PGA professional Mike Callahan, who is a narcissist who can't keep his eyes off other women?

This means that during the tournament, she'll be alternately smothered and abandoned by her stepmother, Maureen, who tries to dress like a woman Cassie's age, but can't pull it off and is jealous that Cassie solves murders as a sideline.

But wait, there's more. The circus hasn't started yet. While the tournament is going on, Cassie agrees to be maid of honor in a wedding with Callahan as best man. Cassie introduced another PGA tour player, Rick Justice to Jeannine Peters, and the wedding has been set to coincide with the tournament.

All this might be manageable, if Dan Peters, father of the bride, weren't a retired marine colonel involved in shady dealings who will do anything to win-- in business or in life.

According to Pinehurst's Council Chair, Junior Mammele. Peters is going to ruin the entrance to Pinehurst by building a big strip mall. Things are looking up for Junior when a hit and run occurs by the property, slowing the development. But then Junior is shot by a sniper at Jeannine's bridal shower and dies--and Dan disappears.

How well will Cassie survive the golf tournament, especially with one of her step brothers on her bag? How will she finally deal with Mike Callahan, who has the sensitivity of a post? Will Jeannine and Rick make it to the altar? Who was responsible for the two murders and for drugging Cassie's drink? Was Dan involved in any of the murders and will he reappear? These and five other interesting questions will keep both golfers and mystery lovers alike turning each page.

Armchair Interviews says: Mystery lovers and golfers both will enjoy Roberta Isleib's golf mysteries. They are page turners.

5 out of 5 stars Roberta Isleib Scores Again   August 28, 2005

Roberta Isleib has delivered suspense, romance, murder, and mayhem in her latest Cassie Burdette mystery. Writing with authority, wit, an eye for authentic detail, and an ear for crisp dialogue, Ms. Isleib has created a compelling story with a very appealing protagonist. In Fairway to Heaven, Cassie finds herself involved in a golf tournament that is occurring during the same week as festivities leading up to a wedding in which she is maid of honor. When the bride's father disappears and one of his political enemies is murdered, Cassie turns amateur sleuth. The plot twists and turns, as well as evolving complications in Cassie's relationship with boyfriend Mike Callahan and in the bride's relationship with the groom, kept me up late turning the pages. Ms. Isleib has once again demonstrated her talent for creating riveting psychological mysteries. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and look forward to Cassie's next adventure.
