Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Ms. Beatrice Hempel, teacher of seventh grade, is new—new to teaching, new to the school, newly engaged, and newly bereft of her idiosyncratic father. Grappling awkwardly with her newness, she struggles to figure out what is expected of her in life and at work. Is it acceptable to introduce swear words into the English curriculum, enlist students to write their own report cards, or bring up personal experiences while teaching a sex-education class? Sarah Shun-lien Bynum finds characters at their most vulnerable, then explores those precarious moments in sharp, graceful prose. From this most innovative of young writers comes another journey down the rabbit hole to the wonderland of middle school, memory, daydreaming, and the extraordinary business of growing up.

5 out of 5 stars A+   January 5, 2009
I absolutely fell in love with this collection! How quickly I was transported into the world of this fun, funky middle-school teacher! It had me laughing, crying, blushing and cheering for the characters that seemed to materialize upon the pages. From the first story I was hooked and found myself turning each page with anticipation and indulgence. Sarah Shun-lien Bynum proves to be truly a master of her craft, making each word dance and play as she pleases, delighting her readers along the way. It inspired the writer in me and excited the reader in me. I'd recommend you pick this book up asap, but be careful because you won't want to put it down!

5 out of 5 stars Here is Heart   November 11, 2008
I would never have read this book had it not fallen into my hands at the urging of a friend. First of all, what is with that awful, awful cover? And the title? Again, awful.

How many lessons must I (and publishers, for shame) learn about judging a book by its cover? As a writer, I cannot recommend this book enough. Ms Hempel is a thoroughly engaging protagonist full of doubt, wonder, humor, and above all heart. This is a book about life and its author a master. Sarah Shun-lien Bynum's words are carefully chosen - so carefully chosen as to flow effortlessly for the reader.

The sentiment here is not heavy handed; she doesn't beat you over the head. The book is written matter-of-fact, devoid of the chick-flicky weepiness that I so despise. So why did I find myself weeping at the end of this wonderful work of art? I suppose it's because I, as with her former students, remain deeply haunted by Ms. Hempel.

5 out of 5 stars Building on success   September 20, 2008
This is Bynum's second book, following her much-acclaimed Madeleine Is Sleeping. It is presented as a shortish novel, but is essentially a collection of short stories published in various sources, including the New Yorker. Excellently written, witty and profound at the same time. Gives great insight into the seventh-grade mind and that of a teacher dedicated to her charges. Bynum plays with time, psychology and humor in a new and original way. The book is highly entertaining -- perfect for teenagers and parents alike.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Character Development   September 18, 2008
This is is a smart, witty novel. From the middle-schoolers' awkward navigation of early adolescence to this young teacher's honest self-examination, the characters ring true. A wonderful read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Realism   September 18, 2008
Couldn't put this one down. The author writes with such affection for her characters, they spring from the page like tulips after a gentle rain. I LOVED THIS BOOK!
