| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Review The old saying, "The smaller the ball, the better the lit" doesn't always hold true--where are the great Ping-Pong novels?--but Jeff Silverman presents plenty of great golf writing in The First Chapbook for Golfers. From the good times ("The Sweet Spot") to the bad times ("Golf Spelled Backwards is 'Flog'"), Silverman has compiled an excellent collection of brief texts on the royal and ancient game by such links legends as Sam Snead, Ben Crenshaw, and Harvey Penick--as well as pieces from writers as diverse as John Updike, Ian Fleming, and Art Buchwald. This treasure chest of golf lore includes discussions of everything from psychology to etiquette, from the elements of course design to a breakdown of the real cost of your $400 driver, from golf legends to golf advice, and even a section on "The Fairwayest of Them All"--women and golf. Some will undoubtedly be familiar ("Golf is the one game I know which becomes more and more difficult the longer you play it"--Bobby Jones), others perhaps less so ("Golf would be a very dull game it if were entirely a matter of skill"--A.A. Milne), but all will ring true to the duffer. A great little gem of a book. --M. Stein

Like A Hole in One, a Wonderful Surprise July 16, 2000 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I ran across this book in my pro shop and was mindlessly thumbing through it because the message on the flap unabashedly said it was copied after the Harvey Penick books. I thought that was an odd thing to say, but then the first story in the book is by Bud Shrake, co-author of the great Penick books. I could not put this "chapbook" down. There is one great golf story after another. Stories you will memorize, some previously published, some new. There also are a lot of neat surprises.. Some of the stories are hilarious. There are two priceless pieces by Dan Jenkins, my favorite golf author. I reccommend this wonderful book to anyone who loves the game, every aspect of it. I come from a big family of golfers --- this is an elegant little book, attractively priced, and it will take care of about half of my Christmas shopping this year . A brilliant idea, just when I thought every golf book conceiveble had been written.. The title says this is "The First Chapbook for Golfers." I do hope this means there will be a seond. If there is a flaw in the first one I could not find it.
