Amazon.com The Legend of Bagger Vance doesn't break any new ground, but with Steven Pressfield's inspirational novel to guide them, director Robert Redford and screenwriter Jeremy Leven have tilled fertile soil with a graceful touch. Redford does for golf what A River Runs Through It did for fly-fishing: the sport is a conduit for a philosophy of living, and Redford achieves the small miracle of making golf a central metaphor that's visually compelling. Set in Savannah, Georgia, during the early '30s, the story charts the redemption of disillusioned World War I veteran and former golf champion Rannulph Junuh (Matt Damon), who emerges from self-imposed obscurity in an exhibition match against legendary golfers Bobby Jones (Joel Gretsch) and Walter Hagen (Bruce McGill). Having earlier abandoned the socialite (Charlize Theron) who has organized the tournament to promote her late father's spectacular golf resort, Junuh now depends on the support of a young fan (perfectly cast newcomer J. Michael Moncrief) and the mysterious Bagger Vance (Will Smith), a smiling Jiminy Cricket who serves as Junuh's caddy, golf guru, and Socratic angel of mercy. As Junuh regains the "authentic swing" he feared was lost forever, Redford guides his splendid cast through a spiritual journey that is specific to the discipline of golf and yet potently universal. As always, Redford also conveys his respect for nature and the rhythms of life as well as a sweet nostalgia for simpler times and purer values. With the casting of Jack Lemmon as the film's present-day narrator and elderly version of Moncrief's character, The Legend of Bagger Vance gains even greater dignity and, indeed, the glowing aura of legend. --Jeff Shannon
Product Description A disillusioned war veteran, Capt. Rannulph Junah (Matt Damon), reluctantly agrees to play a game of golf. He finds the game futile until his caddy, Bagger Vance (Will Smith), teaches him the secret of the authentic golf stroke which turns out also to be the secret to mastering any challenge and finding meaning in life.

Review of the Book April 28, 2010 Big Ed (Texas) The service of ordering and receiving the book was good. However I was disapointed with the book. It wasn't at all what I expected from the book.
The Legend of Bagger Vance April 6, 2010 C. Helm (Portland, OR USA) This is one of those "feel good" movies that you like to watch on a stormy rainy day, or whenever you feel a bit down. It's also the great sports underdog, rags to riches story. I don't think this film has been given the credit it deserves. Besides a great lead cast, the supporting cast is a collection of outstanding character actors. Bruce McGill is magnificent as Walter Hagen, for example. Add Robert Redford as the Director and this period piece film has it all. An outstanding soundtrack makes this great film even better. While golfers will enjoy that the story involves two of the legends of golf in their heyday-Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen, non-golfers also seem to enjoy this great story and film. Great acting, great cinematography, great directing, and a great soundtrack makes this a truly enjoyable film.
A pretty bore... April 1, 2010 Andrew Ellington (I'm kind of everywhere) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I made the mistake of seeing this back when it was released. I say that (the `mistake' part) because I was not yet fully invested in the idea of expanding my taste in film and so I saw this under the preconceived notion that a Will Smith movie would be entertaining in a funny `haha' kind of way. Yes, I knew it was a dramatic film, but really, I was young. Anyways, I hated it. That said, over this past decade, I have refined my taste in film and have begun to embrace and even laud films that are not your generic fare. So, in an attempt to prove myself wrong, I decided to watch this film again.
Some films, no matter what your taste level, are just bad.
I've made mention of a similar problem when reviewing the equally mind numbing bore of a film entitled `The Turning Point' (although at least that film had two very good lead performances to lift it out of the trenches of pure travesty). Some sports films cannot transcend their own genre. You see, with most sports movies you don't really need to have a love or adoration or even respect for the game itself. The film understands how to rise above the audience's feelings towards the sport in order to create a film that is appealing and entertaining regardless. With `The Turning Point' and `The Legend of Bagger Vance', you practically have to be a devoted follower of the sport (in this instance, golf) to appreciate this film. They liken this to `A River Runs Through It' but I degress, because at least that film had some compelling acting and a flowing tale of sibling affections. This film borders on ridiculous and panders on full out boring from beginning to end.
There is nothing here to grab you.
And, on top of that, the acting is nothing to write home about. I agree with those who state that the acting highlight here is the young J. Michael Moncrief (not so young anymore), and Lemmon's narration and small bit here is nicely done, but aside from them there is nothing to elevate the films mediocrity. Charlize Theron can act, but she hasn't mastered acting and being pretty at the same time. In other words, when she is pretty (like she is here) apparently she forgets how to act. Matt Damon is a pretty good actor in my book, but he looks bored here. Will Smith is just all sorts of hammy ridiculousness here. Seriously, this is kind of embarrassing.
I will say that this film is very pretty to look at. The cinematography and technical aspects of this film are, at times, stunning. Like my title suggests, this is a pretty bore. So, technically this was a finely made film, but overall this is a complete waste of time.
Quick delivery! March 14, 2010 Carol A. Franco I'm pleased that I received my DVD purchase within just a few days. The shipment was to take two days; however, because of the snowstorm over the Valentine's Day weekend, the DVD arrived 3 days later than promised. But I am still a satisfied customer, because I was able to track the delivery and could see that everything possible was being done to get the package to me.
PS: Amazon.com was the only place I could find this particular DVD and the price was right!

Suits us to a 'tee' February 18, 2010 rubytuesday My husband and I are not golfers; nor do we watch the sport. We happne upon this movie when channel hopping and it immediately peaked our interest. We both absolutely loved this movie, so much so, that I had to add it to our collection to watch again at my leisure. It is filled with symoblism and parallelisms and can bring different messages to diffeent individuals. My hubby loves the old westerns and Clint Eastwood movies but he even recommended this movie to some of our friends. He also enjoys certain historically based movies. I think, because he had heard of the two golf pros, he liked the story line in the movie that was able to keep his interest. I enjoy movies with some historical insertion, (i.e. Titanic and crime novel types). I was intrigued by the spiritualism. The little boy n the film stole the show, not to mention the artisty of the lead actors. To top it off, I understand that this was the great Jack Lemon's last film. For the entertainment value and the price of the DVD, it was well worth the cost. After watching the movie, I was moved to do more research on its professional critiques and was surprised (but in a sense could understand) some being offended by Will Smith's role; however, I was looking beyond the person, an into his portrayal of that spirit. I would rate this 5 stars if I could.
