Product Description GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED (DVD/WS)
Amazon.com You wouldn't think a movie that uses the game of golf as a metaphor for class struggle could be so entertaining. The Greatest Game Ever Played stars the charming Shia LaBeouf (Holes) as Francis Ouimet, a golfer who, in 1913, rose from caddy to U.S. Open champion at the age of 20--despite the resistance of the powers that be, who thought it unseemly for a lower-class plebian to play the sport of gentlemen. Ouimet's main competitor is Harry Vardon (Stephen Dillane, The Hours), a British professional, still considered one of the greatest players of all time, who fought his own class battles. The two go head to head in a genuinely gripping match, deftly balanced against the juxtapositions of their personal struggles. Is it sentimental and formulaic? Is the outcome a foregone conclusion? Yes, but it doesn't matter--formulas exist because, when executed with verve and dexterity, they work. Bill Paxton, best known as an actor (One False Move, Apollo 13), steps into the director's chair and hits all the right notes, aided by an excellent cast playing colorful characters, a vivid recreation of the time period, glowing cinematography, and an expert pace. The Greatest Game Ever Played works. --Bret Fetzer

Not To be Missed February 13, 2010 Borowy26 (Chicago) Every resident of North America who has taken up the game of golf as a hobby owes a debt of gratitude to Franis Ouimet, the former caddy from Brookline, Massachusetts. Ouimet's astounding victory at the 1913 US Open over two highly rated golf champions from the United Kingdom, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, served to popularize the game of golf in the USA and introduce the sport to the masses. Prior to Ouimet's storybook victory, golf was the exclusive province of the wealthy and the privileged. After Ouimet's startlingly improbable tournament victory in 1913, players like Walter Hagen and Chick Evans made the game acceptable to the commoners.
The dramatization is remarkably accurate by Hollywood standards. The movie contains an occasional anachronism and the screenplay takes a few liberties with the plot (for example, inventing a romantic interest for Ouimet and making the tournament victory come down to the final putt on the 18th green when in reality Vardon fell behind on the 17th hole of the playoff round), but overall the story is wholly satisfactory. The dvd version of the film contains numerous valuable extras, which include an actual television interview with Ouimet recounting his victory fifty years after the fact.
Unlike the current generation of pro golfers, the players of this bygone era had to endure numerous hardships that made the game as much a test of stamina as of skill (in earlier tournaments, players were expected to complete two rounds per day in all types of weather and bogey golf was considered to be good scoring). "The Greatest Game Ever Played" is a fascinating recreation of a bygone era.
