Perhaps if The Bishop's Wife had lapsed on its copyright and fallen into the public domain like It's a Wonderful Life, it would be as much a Christmas staple as that classic. It certainly deserves to be. Dudley (Cary Grant) is an angel sent down by the prayers of a new bishop (David Niven). The bishop is trying to build a new cathedral, and he's so entrenched in his fundraising that he's watching his own marriage crumble around him. Loretta Young is devoted, moist-eyed, and basically a great date for the tempted Dudley. They drink in the afternoon, go skating at night, and make impulse buys. The skating sequence beats mightily on one's suspension of disbelief, but the rest of the film is an absolute joy. Grant is suave, worldly, and enchanting. A wonderful present for anyone who has not seen it. --Keith Simanton

3 out of 5 stars Can't Explain Why I like This So Much   November 16, 2008
An angel comes to visit a bishop for Christmas, to guide him away from material things and toward a higher purpose.

With Cary Grant as the angel, this should be a better movie. But poor direction from Henry Koster and a disappointing performance from Grant leave it lacking. There's so much room for magic in this movie, but instead we get a heavy dose of cheap special effects. Still, David Niven and Loretta Young bring the story back to its true message and that always leaves my eyes a little watery. Monty Woolley turns in a respectable performance, too.

None of that explains why I find this movie so compelling. Maybe it's just that I'm a sap for the season. Maybe it's the small but lovely contributions of Elsa Lanchester and Sara Haden as the bishop's housekeeper and secretary. But it's probably the beautiful redemption of Gladys Cooper who turns the stereotype of the bitter, rich widow into something that resonates with the importance of memories and the real meaning of the Christmas spirit. Whatever it is -- and despite my criticisms -- give this one a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas classic.   October 22, 2008
The Bishop's Wife is a treat to watch. Even if it isn't Christmas.
But why no 2 disc collector edition treatment.
Surely if ever a movie deserved to be presented in such a maner. The Bishop's Wife rates it. More so than Holiday Inn, which has been given
both a 2 disc and 3 disc edition.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Delight   August 17, 2008
This classic story will always appeal to the heart and soul. In its charming and gentle way, it reveals the true road to happiness. It values are gently interwoven into the fabric of the film. Being a black and white buff, I feel it allows you to be drawn in to the characters and their human struggles with this world. Brillently casted, this marvelous piece of art will allow you to escape into a world that enriches your soul.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Little Film   May 23, 2008

What a pity it is that films such as this are virtually unthinkable in contemporary culture. Explicitly Christian but not preachy or sectarian, it offers a universal message as appropriate at Christmas as any other time. The galaxy of stars (Young, Grant, Niven) and excellent supporting cast are used to great advantage. Goldwyn had thought of Niven in what became the Grant role, but Grant wisely persuaded him to cast it in its present form. 'Heartwarming' is the word that most quickly comes to mind, something that is just as necessary today as it was in 1947. The Bishop's Wife is a romantic comedy without sex, a reflection on wealth and religion without anger or bitterness and a reflection on essential human good without soppy sentimentality. It is hopeful without being doctrinaire and sweet without being saccharine. We would not want a current array of films that only included works such as this, but it would be nice to have a few from time to time. If you have not seen it, do so. It will lift your spirits.

5 out of 5 stars The Bishop's Wife   January 23, 2008
Excellent movie. Classic Cary Grant movie with Cary playing the one who DOESN'T get the woman in the end. Nice movie.
