5 out of 5 stars A rare glimpse of the jazz greats of all time all on 2 discs   September 11, 2007
Both discs are in B&W which is understandable since they were produced over 50 years ago; long before color and the digital age. Notwithstanding this medium, the overall sound and picture quality is quite good except for a few parts where the commentary lacked sufficient clarity. But I was thoroughly satisfied with this recording because of its invaluable musical content. Actually. being in B&W the films captured the mood and ambience of that era much better than if it was in color.
Where else can you see and hear Miles, Webster, Basie, Parker, Mulligan, Rich, Jacquet, Kessel, Eldridge, Giuffre, Freddie Green, Jamal, Jo Jones and Ella and Holliday among a host of others all in one compact 2 disc set? Look for performances of Miles, Monk and a very youthful Ahmad Jamal - these performances alone will justify the purchase. All songs are as famous as their artistes who perform them.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best jazz film sets   February 28, 2007
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

I must respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer: there is really nothing wrong with the quality here. The source material for the Sound of Jazz and the Miles Davis performance are kinescopes of the shows and are in about as good quality here as you will find. Certainly not "high-definition," but very good for late-1950s kinescopes and as good as, or better than, any other transfers I have seen of the same material. The classic Jamming The Blues, with its profound Lester Young performances, is presented in excellent quality. The Charlie Parker footage is stunning and worth the price of the set all by itself -- not just the television show with Dizzy Gillespie (excellent quality) but the more recently discovered footage of Bird with Coleman Hawkins and Buddy Rich (also excellent quality). This really is an essential set. If you love classic jazz don't hesitate.

2 out of 5 stars Very poor Video Transfer   September 10, 2005

The product is a terrible transfer, not from film, but rather from video. Thre producer claims to have gone to great lengths in restoring quality to the segments. I have seen wonderful, clean copies on TCM's "One Reel Wonders." The performances themselves are wonderful and worth having, it is too bad that the overseas producer has turned out such poor quality 'dupes. Can ONLY recommend THIS DVD compilation to the die hard Jazz Head, Caveat Emptor.

5 out of 5 stars Lives Up To The Name!!!!   December 28, 2004

This film compilation on DVD proves that jazz is America's classical music. Picture a 2 disc DVD set including: "Jammin' The Blues" from 1942 featuring Lester Young, Big Sid Catlett, Jo Jones, and Roy Eldridge to name a few, "Hot House" from 1951 featuring Charlie Parkers' only U.S. TV appearance with Dizzy Gillespie, "JATP" jam session featuring Lester Young, Ben Webster, Charlie Parker, Buddy Rich, Ella Fitzgerald, etc., 1958's complete "Sound of Miles Davis" featuring Miles himself, John Coltrane, Tony Williams, Nat Adderley, Gil Evans, etc., the complete 1959 CBS broadcast "Sound of Jazz" featuring almost every name in the book, and finally the complete "Studio 61" broadcast featuring Ahmad Jamal and Ben Webster.

Needless to say, this lives up to the billing as "The Greatest Jazz Films Ever". When this came out on DVD, I knew that I needed to have it, and so does any music (jazz or otherwise) fan. Without a doubt, this is the best music DVD set that I've ever had the privilage of watching. BUY IT TODAY!!!!!!!!
