I'm new to the Wii platform (love it) and new to the Tiger Woods series. Having said that, I intensely enjoy this game and highly recommend it.
What stands out for me most in this game is the fun that all the combined aspects create. The richness of building up your skills and seeing your game improve is really enjoyable, as are the various formats of play, party games, online play, and progression through the tour and challenge events.
For the gameplay, the full swing is great, but I struggle with the short irons, especially when a 50-70% swing is required. Those are tough to hit, but do-able with a few practice swings.
Putting is tricky at first, and not at all realistic, but once you get the hang of it you can consistently line up and hit puts in from just about any length. I think this is one area where newcomers aren't burdened by what I understand are drastic changes from earlier versions. Tip: The putting backswing is very controllable and forgiving. To line up your percentage, bring you backswing back very patiently and slowly; then swing forward firmly. If you mess up the backswing or go too far, just let go of B and try again. Tip 2: Never, ever use the previous tip on a real golf course.
I avoid the advanced swing because of the strange contortions required for draw and fade, and because of the unreasonable difficulty it introduces to putting. It is quite impossible to get a solid read on a virtual green with the visual aids provided, and the standard mode's putting preview is a clever and effective tool to help you while avoiding making every putt a gimme.
Even bearing its shortcomings in mind, I have tremendous fun playing this game and am fully addicted.

If you own Tiger 2008 for Wii, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS! It feels like 10 steps backwards.
As previously mentioned, the worst offender is putting. It is completely ruined - verging on the unplayable. How and where the ball goes is completely irrelevant to how hard you swing.
In Tiger 2008, the putting motion was significantly more realistic to what putting is on a real golf course.
In Tiger 2009, every putt must be attempted with the same finesse as shoveling snow. Even then chances are your ball will travel about 20% of your desired distance.
There are other quirks and annoyances that detract from the overall playability of this game, but they all pale in comparison to the travesty that is putting in this game.

As the first reviewer noted, EA has completely ruined this game by changing the putting system. The putting system in '08 was very intuitive and natural feeling. Now, it's clunkier, less intuitive, takes longer, and loses all of the "feel" that the Wii remote brings to the game. They also changed the basic command/operation system and the game now takes longer to play and is less smooth. Overall a very disappointing "upgrade" You're much better off buying '08 in my opinion.
Better than '08 in several respects September 2, 2008
So, like everyone else, I have found the new putting system to be frustrating. Whoever thought that having several different putters to choose from must not be a real golfer. But outside of this significant step backwards, I think '09 is better than its predecessor.
Most significantly, in Tiger Woods '08 I found that at times during chipping or iron shots, my character would take a 10 yard stroke during my back swing. I can live with learning how to take a 60% swing, but accidental shots are not acceptable. Although I've only placed a handful of rounds on this game so far, I haven't had any problems.
As for the putt preview, I think the new version is more realistic than '08, where you could essentially take practice shots until you make one (also not a realistic golf approach). I feel that the Tiger Challenge has a cleaner layout this year, and I like that the events are labeled as short, medium, or long depending on how long it takes to complete them.
All things considered, if you own TW '08 and you're happy with it, I wouldn't necessarily rush out for this one. But outside of the putting experience, it's still the best golf game for the Wii.

Yes, the putting could be improved but it's not the worst feature of this game --- not even close. Putting just takes practice transitioning QUICKLY from the backswing to the forward swing at exactly the right moment on the power gauge.
Frankly, the Wii controls need improvement in general and i hear that some improvements may be in the works.
The real problem is the usual EA Tiger Woods glitches, along with shoddy implimentation of the short game shots which, by the way, have always been utterly dreadful --- in this game they are basically unplayable.
Taking something off of your shot is, for all intents and purposes, not possible. I think that this is equal parts TW-09 and the Wii controls. At any rate it's horrible.
Still I give it a four star rating for all the things it get's right. And after all it's the first TW game i tried for the Wii and it's generally a very fun game --- i mean actually swinging and all that. It's fun.
And it does work well for most shots that the player will need to make in order to score well and win. The new "Club Tuner" feature will also help in this regard.
I guess we'll really have a cool golf game when TW-12 comes out on the Wii-2 --- for now this is passable.
