A Well-Balanced Game August 26, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have always been a fan of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series. I've had it for Wii and I've had it for the xbox 360 - a couple of different versions spanning a few years.
This game is one of the most entertaining video games out there, without frying your mind with mind-numbing time-killing violence. You will actually feel refreshed and relaxed at the end of a nice session of this game.
However, this game is not meant for very short play intervals. You need to relax, enjoy the most authentic golfing experience that is possible through a video game, right in the comfort of your home.
The entire golfing experience feels very real here. You do feel those bunkers out there, and you do see those trees blocking your way to that nice little hole. And if you end up (ever) scoring an eagle, you are bound to be smiling for the rest of your game. It's a great game.
I have some comments on the series in general. EA could have chosen to implement a sort of real-world walk around play. The player could have walked around in a simulated 3-D world and then when he is ready to take his shot, it could have switched to the play mode where you start aiming etc. That would have made it more closer to the real golfing experience, because at least some part of the fun is in walking around, exploring the golf course etc. But that would add a completely new dimension to this genre, and probably increase the developing efforts manifold.
The style that this series has, it takes you from your one shot to the next, and that is done in the most authentic fashion. Spare the actual walking to where your ball landed, and this is the most authentic golf game out there.
Over the years, this game has been optimized and crafted to make it more fun, and more authentic - where every level of golfer (frequent players to absolutely never played golf) gets to learn something from this game.
I see every series brings more detail into the game - not just graphics or game play, but the actual factors that go into playing golf. The player skills system seems to be very well done.
The golf courses feel very real. The feel of bunkers is very real and putting needs skill. One thing EA needs to do more is to give more audio control to the user. I would like to just hear nice bird sounds, and maybe ocean sounds etc (depending on the real geography of the course) and cut out any audience sounds. Just as if I was hitting the course on a saturday morning. The sounds are still very well done and graphics are amazingly real. You get to choose equipment as you advance your game, which is fun.
If you play close attention to your playing, vs if you are just playing casually, you will end up scoring better when you were paying attention.
This game has been a balancing act for EA, and they have done an excellent job at it.
I highly recommend it to folk, who like myself like relaxing games. This is a title that is meant for adults as much as it is meant for youngsters.
