Editorial Review
Given that most people will buy anything with Mario's chubby face plastered on it, the developers of Mario Golf could have taken the easy route with this license. Instead they practically ignored it, focusing on gameplay instead. Players can jump straight into the golfing action on one of the game's four courses, but we recommend checking out the excellent role-playing mode. In this mode, you create a character and improve his or her golf skills by earning experience points in tournaments, playing minigames, or receiving items from characters in the gaming world.

This is one of the best arcade golf games on any system, period. The physics just feel right. If you perform poorly, it was probably your fault--rather than poor game controls. The camera zooms in on the action when the ball gets close to the hole, turning many shots into nail-biting experiences. After a few pathetic rounds, we were able to get a feel for the wind and the lie of the greens. Then, it happened--we became hooked on this must-own game. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Terrific, intuitive controls
  • Ability to improve performance of your golfer in the RPG mode
Cons:
  • Not your typical Mario game
