1 out of 5 stars It's a bore   January 12, 2007
The worst first person game I have ever played. It's pretty bad when you dispose of drivers in a jeep and the jeep still drives by empty!!!!

4 out of 5 stars DON'T GO "VIETNAM" - IT'LL CHANGE YOU!!   November 4, 2006
Like sniping? Then you get to travel with a squad that will do their best to accomodate you with plenty of opportunities. MARINE SHARPSHOOTER 2 Takes you on mission-specific tours with objectives that can be quite challenging but fun. The game has the usual EASY - MEDIUM - HARD settings then there is the toughest setting of all ...VIETNAM. Probably the closest I ever want to get to the real thing...honestly....

(Luckily you can use an invunerability code and get some satisfying revenge should the "reality" of the VIETNAM setting be a little more than u can handle!)

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but very fun.   July 21, 2006

I own just about every first-person shooter ever made, and while "Marine Sharpshooter 2" is certainly not the cream of the crop, it does have quite a lot going for it, if you fit the bill. If you like stealthily sneaking around, avoiding the bad guys and you like sniping first and foremost, this can be quite a fun game.

Look, I really love more in-depth games such as the "Ghost Recon" series and "Operation Flashpoint", but sometimes I don't want to have to think so hard or work so hard to get through an area. Sometimes I do, and those other games are great for intense sessions, but sometimes I want something a bit easier. Simply put, this game is just what I need for those times when I just want to snipe, move, snipe, duck for cover, sneak around, and snipe some more.

My favorite area took place in a pretty large town where you start out with a good amount of sniping ammo, and thus you think you've got it made. I think I had over 200 rounds at the start of the level (and it was a huge level). However, there were no health packs or ammo until the very end of the level, which I reach over an hour later. By then I was down to zero pistol rounds and 12 sniper rounds. I was getting pretty tense about being able to finish that level, but I did.

You can save anywhere either using quick save or the standard save. The controls work excellently, and the scope zooms in smoothly. I had no issues with video or control problems, and ambient sound was a nice touch. There's a good variation of locations, from dark jungles, to rainy areas, to cities, and an abandoned fort. The game is sort of linear, but mostly does a good job of letting you explore a bit. I wish more games like this took the time to create secret areas you could discover, as I love to take my time and explore.

The only problem I found was sometimes it seemed as if certain leaves on bushes would stop my bullet. A minor problem, and a rare occurrence. I'd simply move a bit for a better shot. There's a stealth meter (kinda like Thief's), which I didn't use too much. Enemy AI was not the greatest, but I didn't mind that either. You can stand, crouch, or belly-crawl, and I used all 3 positions quite a bit. Your spotter-guy that accompanies you does a decent job of staying out of your way and announcing when he spots an enemy, at which time you better check your GPS to see exactly where the enemy he sees is. Sometimes you won't be able to see him though, because he'll be up in a tree or on a rooftop. You really have to proceed carefully.

Overall, not a very realistic game, but extremely fun if you like sniping. Other fun budget sniping games I loved: "Vietnam: Black Ops", and "Black Ops 2: Special Assignment". Both those games are steeped in atmosphere and very fun to play also.

2 out of 5 stars Pleases nobody   April 17, 2006

Someone once remarked that this game has little to keep you going and I have to agree that this hits the mark. I lasted halfway through the second mission.
Granted, this game isn't as bad as some games in this genre can be, but it's simple not good. The graphics are weak, the sound is weak, the ai is weak and the storyline is weak. You soon begin to release that this is no way to spent your time.
The first mission requires you to advance through the jungle while the night sets in. It has actually a kind of fitting atmosphere and isn't bad. Although it seems to drag on for too long. But there are some tell-tale signs of weakness.
At the start it is impressed upon you to avoid getting into a fire fight because there are over thousand enemy soldiers deployed in the area. Yet the game forces you down the first person shooter road, because you soon find out that gunning down soldiers is unavoidable, far less trouble and not penalised. The map is to small to circumvent the enemy. At some points ambushes are triggered and you have no choice but to fight it out man-to-man.
I have read some books and a field manual on sniping and it has a lot to do with avoiding standup fights. Sniping is about patience and getting that one shot right, that one shot being aimed at a high important target like a key person or installation. After the shot you relocate as fast as possible. This actually means that you are not there to shoot down everything and the entire mission should be built around that fact, IF your aim is to create a sniping game. But either the designers failed to grasp this essence or they wanted just to create a first person shooter where your weapon of choice is limited to a sniper rifle and a side arm.
If the first mission didn't give you enough hints, the second mission will do. You are now to advance in broad daylight through a village crawling with warned enemy troops. The civilians might or might not betray you and you can't shoot them, because then the game will end. If there was ever made an ill fitting mission for a sniper then this must be the one. And what is more, you simply have no choice in the matter. Any sensible guy would simply pull out and this then was what i proceeded to do.
I think that if someone wants to make a sniper game he should concentrate on what sniping entails. There are excellent books about it and if books aren't inspiring enough there are probably some veteran snipes who can tell you all about it. More could have been made of the interaction between the spotter and the sniper, with the player able to play both, for instance. Fitting missions, maps and story line would have to go along with this.
Simply arming the player with a sniper rifle doesn't turn a first person shooter into a sniping game and a first person shooter with only a sniper rifle is an akward first person shooter to say the least. This game will therefore please nobody.
