Man Your Own Jackhammer! December 12, 2008 Let me preface by saying that I've been a huge fan of Coheed and Cambria since their days of playing at Olives in Nyack, NY and immediately post-Shabutie, so my review is biased because they are my favorite band. People have compared Claudio Sanchez's vocals to that of Geddy Lee from Rush, which I can understand...and sometimes hear (I like to think that it makes him distinctive from the other artists out today), however, the music is more along the lines of a slightly subdued Iron Maiden in my opinion....not to mention that they have written a storyline to accompany the albums in the form of a graphic novel. Their talent is something undeniable, even my boyfriend, who doesn't really like them, can't say that these guys can't play.
But anyway, thank you for letting me get that off my chest! This album is the sophomore followup to "The Second Stage Turbine Blade", which is quite different. SSTB is much more raw and young sounding, with alot more screaming sequences. For Equal Vision records, it fit right into the mold. IKSOSE3 has many more melodic and prog-rock tones. Some songs are quite long, ranging from 6-8 minutes apiece, so be prepared to be engulfed in the music. The first song (2nd track) is the title track of the album, and you can get pumped up listening to the screaming line of "Man your own Jackhammer!" The intricate drum beats and guitar riffs are not to be ignored, Josh Eppard plays some incredible syncopation here.
The rest of the album flows nicely with another great one called "The Crowing", which is quite brooding and powerful....and then there are The Camper Velorium songs (3 of them), which goes from an 80's sounding "Faint of Hearts", to the anti-ballad "Backend of Forever", to the almost-metal "Al the Killer" which sounds like a duet with Satan and is ferocious.
There are two of the radio friendly singles on this album: "A Favor House Atlantic", and "Blood Red Summer", which I think are the poppier songs on the album.
The album ends with "The Light and the Glass", which is like an eerie lullaby that allows all hell to break loose at the end.
Of course the album is filled with a lot of "whoaaa-ohsss" which is signature of the band at this point, but the sing-along quality is quite high and I think it's a powerful album with catchy melodies and intricate music. I really think this album is one of their best, it's a great follow-up to their first album.
Absolutely beautiful December 11, 2008 The other day I was kind of stuck, debating what my favorite coheed album was. Sure, i'm a fanboy (although for good reason), but to me all four have their high points. But still, I came back to this one every time. I have never in my life (and I've listened to almost every genre of music, from emo to pop to classic rock to goth), heard an album with so many stand out songs. Every SINGLE song on the album could be a hit song to me, and sometimes it is really sad when people cannot appreciate it.
When I first started listening to them, I just managed to find them somewhere, and loved their catchy hooks and irresistable vocals without even knowing the lyrical content. And after several years, thoes continue to amaze me as I find new things in every song. But please, stop comparing him to rush. Not only has claudio never listened to rush, they are different people. And if you base a bands status only on how similar their lead singer sounds to other bands, well, we would still be stuck in the 70's, because every band cannot be completely unique. That being said, they are still the most original band I have ever heard, and I'd love any comments challenging that.
To the album, 5 stars is hardly enough. From the eerie but fitting (once you know the story) the ring in return, it launches into one of the most powerful songs in years, the title track, which is a hefty 8 minutes of almost metal sounding riffs and powerful lyrics. Cuts marked in the march of men, while not as mind blowing, is still powerful in itself, with coheed's trademark vocals and musical talent clearly evident. Three evils is one of the catchiest songs i've ever heard, hell I have to catch myself from singing "pull the trigger and the nightmare stops" in public. And no, if you are put off by emo lyrics, have no fear, this line fits very well into the story.
Then it cuts into the crowing. Even before I was able to decipher and understand the lyrics I still loved the song (which may be a weak point for some people, but clear and understandable lyrics are not always needed). And when you are a coheed fan, the lyrics simply put chills up your spine every single time you hear it. Then it switches from dark and heavy to light and poppy in blood red summer. Almost a completely different song, but so catchy you can't help but love it. Again, understanding the lyrics is a plus, but its great either way.
following that, the 3 velorium campers hit you in the face. As if you didn't know what was happening before, not knowing the backstory will leave you without a clue. However, all 3 individual songs are instantly classic. Faint of hearts is a fairly light but still retains their unique sound. Great to listen to by itself just when you're in a dull mood, or as a follow up to blood red summer. Backend of forever is actually rather emo, although considering the character being portrayed, it makes sense. Kind of depressing at points, but still amazingly catchy lyrics that will stay in your head for days. Al the killer, one of the best songs i've heard of all time. Probably scary at first when you hear the chorus, but its always fun to creep people out with lyrics they don't understand. Fairly dark and fast song, I just love it, you might not at first, but if you like the band you will love the song.
And now the hit, a favor house atlantic. Sure, sometimes a band's "hit" songs can be lacking in depth compared to the rest of the album in genre's such as this, but this does not disappoint. One of the catchiest guitar rhythm's out there, and just a fast and happy sounding song (almost contrary to the lyrics, which is one of the band's highest points, the ability to use the sound of the music to relate to the story). Either way, you will probably like this song even if you find the album pretentious (ie you cannot understand it). If you don't, why the hell are you reading a review about it?
finally (almost done) the next two (light and the glass, and the hidden 21:13), deserve a review, nay, an album to themselves. Even if only these songs were on the album, it would be worth buying. Over 16 minutes for both, which may seem intimidating, but they are by no means repetitive or boring. The light and the glass is at start a touchy ballad about a lost love, however by the end it goes into very progressive esque guitar parts combined with very moodly lyrics. Takes a while, but one of their best. And the hidden 21:13? Well, the only way to appreciate it is to listen to it. I actually didn't when I first bought the album, but now, well, I would probably rate it their top song in an album, or even a career of masterpieces.
Sure, most of this sounds like a crazy fan's overenthusiastic and uninformed praise for the album. In part it may be, and shame on me for not being a professional music critic, but I do like what music I like. Really, its best not to listen to reviews too much, as this band has reviews like this and the polar opposite. I'd suggest looking up their music on their website or on youtube, and if you like it starting with one or two of their cd's. I promise you won't be dissapointed if you are one who likes "progressive" rock, and aren't afraid to listen to a singer with a higher pitched voice then your average rock band, or a band with many long songs. Because even without the backstory, they still know how to make some damn catchy songs, and definitely worth trying.
probably their best album. May 4, 2008 It is a tough choice between this album and Second Stage Turbine Blade for best Coheed album, but i think this gets the slight edge. it sounds overall more mature and refined. it is definitely better than the volume 4 albums.
What seems perfect must always be refined March 18, 2008 And that's exactly what Co&Ca do with their second album... i can't explain any further.. so only purchase if you're a fan...
GOOD ALBUM December 6, 2007 an excellent album, I love Apollo I, this one might be between Apollo I and Apollo II. That my opinion, good rock album, some prog here and there, powerful guitar, Claudio's voice is very good and Mr. epard's drumming, super precise. good music.
