Amazon.com Product Description
Save money on monthly gym fees and get yourself in shape with the compact, comfortable Schwinn 231 recumbent exercise bike. The 231 boasts all the high-quality features of the Schwinn 213, but adds several extras, including a nicer, easier-to-read instrument panel with a three-position angle adjustment, a better cooling fan, a slightly lower pedal height that produces a more comfortable riding position, and an easy step-through frame. And that doesn't even account for all the essentials, which range from 16 resistance levels to handlebars with an integrated heart rate monitor built into the grip. The handiest feature, however, is unquestionably the anatomically designed recumbent seat, which not only offers a dual-position lumbar support for added comfort, but also a padded base that adjusts in the for/aft positions to accommodate a variety of body types and sizes.

Specifications:

  • 16 resistance levels
  • 10 preset programs and 10 profile courses
  • Programs include calorie goal, time trial, fitness test, BMI measurement, recovery test, results mode, quick start, and manual mode
  • Backlit LCD monitor with BioConnect feedback display
  • Workout stats include time, interval time, RPM, watts, distance, pulse, speed, calories, and resistance
  • Extra-wide comfort seat with dual-position lumbar support and slide bolsters
  • Premium BioFit pedals
  • Handlebars with integrated heart rate grips
  • Onboard storage behind seat for easy access to magazines, towels, and other accessories
  • Adjustable cooling fan
  • Transport wheels for easy movement
About Recumbent Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out.

The term recumbent literally means "lying down." Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bike at an great value   January 6, 2009
I purchased this bike as a gift for my wife (yes it was on her x-mas list). Ordering was very easy as usual from Amazon.com and the bike shipped very quickly and arrived within a week. It only took about an hour and half to assemble. All the parts were included, and were well organized and everything even worked even after I assembled it :-) Spend the extra $100 and get model 231 over the 230 it's worth every $$$$

Pros: 22 pound fly wheel gives the bike a true realistic ride, easy to use LCD display and workout options. smooth pedaling and extremely quiet,

Cons: More assembly required than I expected, but it really wasn't hard to assemble. just take your time

I would definitely recommend this bike to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Good product, but a few set backs   January 6, 2009
Very quiet operation and good ergonomics. Delivery was fast and assembly was about 1 1/2 hrs. The only problem was the fan did not work. I called manufacturer which sent me a replacement fan and still didn't work. I think the computer is flawed and now need to have it replaced.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bike   January 6, 2009
Shipping went faster than indicated. The bike was not difficult to put together at all. The materials are of high qaulity. Very satisfied with performance, comfort, design and price. Bike is extremely quiet. Hopefully will last for years.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't last long   January 3, 2009
Purchased this bike in November. When it arrived there was "some assembly required". After a few hours, it was assembled and ready for use. The seat was very comfortable and the bike was very quiet. The fan was pretty much useless as it didn't push enough air to make it worth while and it was quite noisy. Other than that, I really liked this bike....until it broke. One week after I received the bike I got on it in the morning and started to peddle only to hear a grinding noise coming from the flywheel. After researching this online, I discovered that this is a fairly common thing with this model. I contacted Amazon to request return information and they were extremely helpful and accommodating. They paid for the return shipping too! The only thing was that I had to disassemble the whole thing and make it fit back into the original box (which we did accomplish after much trial and error). The return went very smoothly and Amazon deserves a big thank you for their help with the return process. I went out the day after I sent this bike back and bought a Lifecore 1000rb at a local fitness store. It fits much better in my living room (it's noted for it's compact size), is even quieter than the Schwinn and the seat is extremely comfortable (the only down side is that it cost almost 3 times the price of the Schwinn.) I guess you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars 2 years and still good!   December 23, 2008

My husband and I have been using this bike for several years now and it's still holding up beautifully. The only repair we've had to do is tighten a couple bolts. The initial set up was easy, it took the two of us about 45 minutes to get it all set up. I would highly recommend this purchase, its stable and great quality.
