1 out of 5 stars Aside from that Mrs. Lincoln...how was the play?   October 27, 2008

Tiger Woods should be absolutely embarrassed by allowing this game on the market. The putting mechanics are horrific. Other golf games - even the WII Sports games - replicates an actual putting experience, so it's certainly not impossible. The game's designers of Tiger Woods Golf '09 must have been on medication when they designed the putting mechanics found in this game. This game could not have been field tested with actual people before being released unless tested using people who have no clue about the game or putting. Since obtaining cumulative low scores is the key to the game, hitting a great drive and excellent follow up iron shot to the green only to end up 4-putting the green, makes no sense at all. The putting could have easily been designed like the WII Sports Golf to simulate a real putt - both direction and speed - but, instead, you're forced to accommodate a completely unnatural putting stroke that will lead to artificially higher scores (high is bad), muscle memory that is capable of totally screwing up your golf stroke (if you actually play the sport), and total frustration.

Save your hard earned money! Buy the WII Sports Package and see how much fun a family can have playing golf together. Sure, the WII Sports golf is simpler and there are less holes to play, but it won't end up in your video game bone pile after a week or two, where my Tiger Woods Golf '09 currently resides - Shame on Tiger Woods allowing this game into production. It's obvious he never tried it.

3 out of 5 stars I wish I'd stayed with 08   October 18, 2008
Here is my sob story.

I bought a Wii and learned to love Wii Golf. Eventually, I moved up to Tiger Woods 08, and loved it, too. My friends and I started playing often, and I rented the game enough my wife said, "Why don't you buy it and save money?" Good idea! Instead of picking up '08 I waited a month for '09 to come out and bought it the first day of its release.

The putting brought an immediate end to the weekly games with the boys. It is awful.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, and the putting system is great! Useless manual   October 14, 2008

So, if you just read the top review you would probably be led to think that the putting is terrible. That is not the case. The putting is bad if you fail to take a few things into account, primarily multiple putters, and green speed (Which is mentioned nowhere in the manual or the tutorials, but is VERY important to take into account). At first I was having problems putting, especially with short putts, but once I realized that you will often have to adjust which putter you are using, and take into account the green speed when calculating how much power to use it became infinitely better. I now sink about 95% of my putts. The green grid is very easy to read and allows you to determine how much of a left/right break and how much uphill/downhill to account for. The new putt preview is a huge improvement over last years preview in my opinion.

People seem to be complaining alot that chip shots don't fly in the air long enough. Have you guys ever watched someone chip in real life? A real chip shot travels most of it's distance on the ground, just as it does in the game. I have sunk numerous birdies and eagles by chip, the key is to use a little more power than you think since the ball will be rolling along the green.

Driving and approach shots are just about the same as previous years, but if it ain't broke.....

I agree about the announcers though. The announcers are saying the exact same lines as last year (literally word-for-word), so there is 0 innovation on the commentary, and now the new announcers sound very dry and boring as well.

Documentation is practically non-existent. the game comes with a 5-page manual that gives very little if any useful information, and the in-game tutorials are not much help either. Green speed(Press + and go to course information to see the green speed), which is implemented for the first time this year, is not even mentioned in the manual or any of the tutorials, but if you don't account for it you will miss many putts.

Overall I think this game is great and a lot of fun, but a few improvements could be made (especially documentation).

5 out of 5 stars Best Console Golf Game   October 8, 2008
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

I have played dozens of golf games dating back to golf on the Commodore-64. Some games have been completely pathetic, while others have been relatively good. I bought Tiger Woods 09 for the Wii basically because I like to try most every golf game that hits the market. My expectations for this game were actually fairly low, as EA has not exactly put out killer software for the Wii.

Having put in over 30 hours with Tiger Woods 09 I can safely say that this is the most fun console golf game I have ever played. Not only is the game incredibly deep with an absolute ton of modes of play, but it also sports a great online component. The developers really did a good job of making TW09 a truly fun multi-player experience.

What makes Tiger Woods 09 such a great game is the control. The 1:1 swing mechanic can be tuned in a variety of ways. It takes some getting used to in terms of shot strength, but once the user gets it down the game is butter. As far as putting is concerned, this is the best putting system in a golf game, no questions asked. Yes, the putting system may seem confusing at first, but after spending some time with it the user will realize that putting in TW09 is as close to real-life putting yet seen in a golf game. Everything from the clearly visible slope on the greens to the depth of resources the putting system provides to the user makes hanging out on the green a joy.

As to be expected, the graphics of the Wii version of Tiger Woods 09 are not as detailed as those of the 360/PS3 versions, but they are still not too shabby. I particularly like the way the undulations and elevation changes on each hole are depicted.

Finally, EA smartly included an "All-Play" level of difficulty that allows inexperienced or less-skilled gamers to be able to be competitive. Of course, there are standard and advanced difficuly levels as well. This allows someone who has never played the game or is not very good to be able to play with a seasoned TW pro and still have fun without being blown out of the water. I like to play on the hardest difficulty level, but when someone comes over to the house they still have fun since they can play on the easier mode.

Overall, Tiger Woods 09 is exactly the type of sports game Wii owners deserve. It wonderfully takes advantage of the controller technology, offers a ton of modes of play and customizations, and has a high fun factor. Get this game and spend some time learning to play it properly. You will not be sorry.

The game is realistic with lots of options. It would help if better directions came with the game, because of all the options. Overall: Great!
